Following an injury or surgery, custom splints
can be a valuable part of the recovery plan.
Custom splints are fabricated by a certified
hand therapist.
Splints are braces that help immobilize and stabilize a targeted part of the body. Splints are an effective way of allowing a body part to rest. Splints can be used to achieve a variety of objectives such as:
A licensed Occupational Therapist will perform a detailed assessment of your medical issue. They will discuss the best treatment options and therapy for you. They will determine your goals for therapy and plan treatment to achieve your goals.
A licensed Occupational Therapist will assess your elbow, wrist, hand or finger. They will look at your medical history and examine current issues. They will then measure and mold a splint for you. Given your diagnosis, you may also be shown exercises to help. You will receive the splint and wearing instructions.
To see our Occupational Therapist, a doctor’s referral is necessary. This is required for custom made splints, OTC splints and hand therapy. If you have private insurance coverage your treatment may be covered. Please check with your provider.

The base of the thumb is a hard working joint. As such it often becomes arthritic and painful over time. A therapist can fabricate or recommend certain splints that support the base of the thumb. These splints can relieve pressure and reduce pain.
Inflammation of two (APL and EPB) tendons at the wrist and thumb can be painful with movement. A splint allows the two tendons to rest and reduces tendonitis. A thumb spica splint will be fabricated or fitted to your hand to immobilize the wrist and base of thumb.
This occurs from compression to the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel. Numbness, tingling and pain can occur on the fingers. A splint will be made or fitted to keep the wrist in a neutral position to prevent further pressure on the nerve. The therapist may recommend median nerve glide exercises to help with the symptoms.
Broken bones require time to heal. Immobilizing the fracture in a splint allows the bone to heal and recover. Different fractures require various splints. Your therapist will determine the proper splint and wearing schedule based on your diagnosis.
Occur when fingers bend towards the palm and cannot be straightened out completely. This can happen from disease or previous injury. Your therapist will determine the type of splint you require and will provide you with a wearing schedule and treatment options.
There are many other reasons for splinting. Please contact our office to discuss if we can provide you with the splint you require.
